An 18-year-old Afghan national, Hossein G. Haidar, was arrested in Watervliet on hate crime charges after allegedly attacking a Pakistani neighbor during a dispute tied to tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Police say he forced his way into the victim’s home, dragged him outside, and made derogatory remarks about his nationality and ethnicity.
Initially charged as an adult, Haidar was released after authorities confirmed he was a juvenile, born in 2008, and the case was transferred to youth court.
He was held without bail, with a $10,000 bond set, and released into his parents’ custody.
The incident follows a spike in regional conflict after Pakistan’s Feb. 21 air strikes on Afghan militant camps.
