Veteran journalist Sir Trevor McDonald has said he now regrets a question he asked Saddam Hussein during a 1990 interview in Baghdad, calling it overly confrontational and wishing he could rephrase it.
The interview, conducted by ITN amid Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, is featured in his new ITV series, Reporting History, premiering on ITVX and YouTube.
McDonald recalled Hussein’s composed demeanor, despite his brutal reputation, and described the tense conditions his team faced, including being roughed up and strip-searched.
The episode reflects on Iraq’s ongoing struggles after the Gulf War and the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, with McDonald expressing sorrow over the country’s divisions and questioning what more could have been done to stabilize it.
