A U.S. judge in Oklahoma denied the Osage Nation’s request to confirm its reservation, calling the case procedurally flawed but allowing it to refile.
A U.S. federal judge in Oklahoma has denied the Osage Nation’s request to confirm its reservation’s existence, calling the legal move procedurally flawed and stating the court is no longer active in the case.
The ruling, by Judge John D. Russell, does not decide whether the reservation was ever disestablished but provides a framework allowing the tribe to refile its claim in a new lawsuit.
Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear called the decision a roadmap for future legal action, reaffirming the tribe’s position that its reservation remains intact and was federally established and funded by the Osage people.
The case stems from a 2009 ruling and reflects ongoing efforts to secure tribal sovereignty and land rights.
