Spiny water fleas, invasive zooplankton from Eurasia, are spreading in five Algonquin Park lakes, threatening fish and ecosystems.
Ontario Parks warns of spiny water fleas in five Algonquin Park lakes—North Sea, Manitou, Kioshkokwi, Three Mile, and Rock Lakes—first detected in 2022.
Native to Eurasia, these 1.5 cm zooplankton reproduce rapidly, survive winter in egg form, and spread via boats, gear, and equipment.
They disrupt ecosystems by reducing native zooplankton, threatening fish like bass, walleye, and trout.
Though harmless to humans and pets, they form visible clumps on ropes and hulls.
Prevention is critical: visitors must clean, drain, and dry all gear and avoid moving between lakes, especially during portages.
The species is now in all five Great Lakes and over 100 Ontario lakes.
