Ontario landlords form coalition to oppose Bill 10’s strict drug liability rules, urging feedback extension.
The Quinte Region Landlords Association has formed a province-wide coalition opposing Ontario’s Bill 10, specifically a provision that would make landlords liable for drug activities on their properties unless they prove ignorance, with penalties including fines up to $250,000, property seizure, or jail time.
The law, passed but not yet in effect, has drawn criticism from landlords, tenant advocates, mental health groups, and housing nonprofits who say it is unrealistic, could increase evictions, and may deter supportive housing for vulnerable populations.
The alliance urges stakeholders to submit feedback by March 8 and calls for the deadline to be extended, warning the law could worsen housing insecurity.
