NYC to launch free 2-K program in 2026, starting with 2,000 seats citywide.
New York City is launching a free 2-K childcare program in September 2026, starting with 2,000 seats in four high-need neighborhoods across Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.
The initiative, backed by $73 million in state funding and part of a broader effort to expand universal early education, aims to grow to 12,000 seats by 2027 and eventually serve all two-year-olds citywide within four years.
No income, immigration, or employment requirements apply.
Governor Kathy Hochul pledged state funding for the first two years, while city officials plan to sustain the program through targeted taxes.
The rollout, focused on equitable access and workforce support, builds on existing universal pre-K and 3-K programs.
