Nigerian DisCos must refund ₦20.33B in unpaid meter costs to customers by 2027, via monthly bill credits.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has mandated all electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to repay ₦20.33 billion in unpaid meter costs to customers within 12 months, starting March 1, 2026. The refunds, tied to the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework, will be issued as automated monthly credits on customer bills, with no offset against existing debts. DisCos must submit monthly compliance reports and set up dedicated complaint channels. The order aims to address long-standing reimbursement delays, improve transparency, and restore trust in Nigeria’s power sector.
