NASA delays Artemis II launch to April 2026 due to rocket seal issue, aiming for a crewed lunar flyby.
NASA is preparing for a potential April 2026 launch of Artemis II, the first crewed mission to the Moon since 1972, after a helium flow issue caused by a dislodged seal in the SLS rocket’s upper stage led to a rollback to the Vehicle Assembly Building.
Engineers repaired the quick-disconnect fitting and are conducting tests, while also replacing critical batteries and upgrading seals.
The mission will send four astronauts on a lunar flyby, with launch windows set for April 1–6, though delays could push it to April 30.
NASA has also delayed the Artemis III moon landing to 2028, replacing it with a 2027 Earth-orbit test of landing systems.
A new initiative, "NASA Force," aims to boost in-house expertise with two-year contracts for top talent.
