Louisiana proposes Jody’s Law to toughen hit-and-run penalties after a fatal crash and flawed bail process.
Louisiana State Representative Vanessa LaFleur has pre-filed House Bill 806, known as Jody’s Law, to reform hit-and-run penalties and procedures after Jody Mann died in a 2025 crash in Livingston Parish.
The bill, advocated by Mann’s mother Holly Crow, would require judicial review before bail is set, create a faster system to share vehicle information with the public, and increase maximum sentences for felony hit-and-run offenses.
The suspect, Brandon Chenevert, was released on a preset bond without a hearing and later rearrested on drug charges, prompting calls for change.
The bill is awaiting consideration during the upcoming legislative session.
