JCB and Resona launch Japan’s first UWB payment system, testing in 2026 with full rollout by 2028.
JCB and Resona have launched the world’s first full-scale project to commercialize ultra-wideband (UWB) payments in Japan, starting in 2026 with testing involving technology partners and merchants.
Small-scale operations are planned for 2027, with full commercialization expected by 2028.
The initiative, part of the FiRa® Consortium, aims to standardize UWB for secure, precise location-based payments, enabling hands-free transactions and real-time data sharing like dietary preferences.
Leveraging Japan’s high adoption of UWB-enabled smartphones and cashless infrastructure, the project supports smart store features such as personalized promotions and navigation.
An open payment system will reduce merchant setup costs and support multiple UWB solutions.
