Ireland has officially nominated former EU Commissioner Phil Hogan as its candidate for the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s director-general position, to be elected in summer 2027.
Hogan, who served as EU commissioner for agriculture and previously held Irish ministerial roles, is seeking the role amid growing European support for a unified candidate.
The FAO, based in Rome, leads global efforts to combat hunger and promote sustainable agriculture.
The election will involve 194 member states, with the current director-general, Qu Dongyu of China, stepping down in mid-2027.
Ireland’s nomination follows internal review and Cabinet approval, with no public costs expected.
