Indonesian police arrested 15 in a ring that killed 12 endangered Sumatran elephants for their tusks, marking the first top-to-bottom dismantling of such a network.
Indonesian police have arrested 15 people in connection with a poaching ring that killed at least 12 endangered Sumatran elephants on Sumatra Island, primarily in Riau province’s Pelalawan district.
The elephants were shot and decapitated, with their tusks trafficked illegally.
Authorities say this is the first time such a network has been dismantled from top to bottom in the region.
The suspects include shooters, tusk extractors, and ivory brokers, and the group is believed responsible for killings in 2024 and 2026.
Sumatran elephants, with fewer than 3,000 left in the wild, face ongoing threats from poaching and habitat loss.
If convicted, suspects could face up to 15 years in prison.
