A flawed NT digital health system, costing $323M, faced safety risks, staff deaths, and delays, despite officials calling it a success.
An inquiry into the Northern Territory’s Acacia digital patient record system has revealed major cost overruns, rising from $186 million to $323 million, along with patient safety concerns and a reportedly toxic workplace culture.
Launched in late 2023, the system was briefly suspended due to critical flaws like incorrect data and locked records delaying care, with some patients waiting over an hour for records.
Medical staff raised alarms about risks to patient safety, while IT employees cited excessive hours and management failures, including a reported death in the project team.
Despite these issues, NT Health maintains the project is a success.
The Public Accounts Committee will release findings and recommendations.
The rollout remains in stage two, with 24 to 30 more months of work expected.
