Echinus Geyser in Yellowstone resumed erupting in February 2026 after over five years of dormancy, spouting every 2–5 hours.
Echinus Geyser in Yellowstone National Park’s Norris Geyser Basin has resumed erupting after more than five years of dormancy, with activity restarting in early February 2026.
The world’s largest acidic geyser, named for its sea urchin-like rocks, began erupting every 2 to 5 hours, reaching heights of 20 to 30 feet.
Its mildly acidic water, similar to orange juice or vinegar, does not significantly erode surrounding rock.
While the geyser’s recent pattern mirrors its 2017 activity, park officials say sustained eruptions into summer are unlikely, though future behavior remains uncertain.
