Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) began excavation of the Elk Creek Project mine portal in southeast Nebraska, marking a major milestone for the underground mine being developed by NioCorp.
The project, which aims to produce niobium, scandium, titanium, and magnetic rare earth elements from a single orebody, is expected to create over 400 jobs and generate more than $600 million in tax revenue.
Smith, a longtime advocate for domestic critical minerals, operated an excavator during the event, which drew local officials and NioCorp executives.
Construction is being led by Nebraska-based Gana Trucking and Excavating, with work progressing toward full-scale development.
The initiative supports national efforts to secure supply chains for materials vital to clean energy, defense, and advanced technologies.
