West Virginia lawmakers push Raylee’s Law to block homeschooling during child abuse investigations, aiming to protect children.
West Virginia lawmakers are racing to pass Raylee’s Law, named after an 8-year-old who died in 2018 after being removed from school, which would temporarily block parents under child abuse investigation from homeschooling their children during a CPS probe.
The bill, supported by bipartisan lawmakers and aimed at preventing abuse from going unnoticed, passed the House Education Committee and is moving toward a floor vote before the March 14 deadline.
The Senate did not vote on it, but a procedural effort to force debate failed.
Critics, including homeschool advocates, argue it infringes on parental rights, while supporters say it’s a necessary safeguard to protect vulnerable children.
