111 unreviewed chemicals added to U.S. foods and supplements, raising safety concerns.
An investigation by the Environmental Working Group found at least 111 chemicals with unknown safety have been added to U.S. foods, drinks, and supplements without FDA review, exploiting a loophole allowing companies to self-declare ingredients as "generally recognized as safe."
The study identified 49 such chemicals in about 4,000 products, including concentrated natural extracts like aloe vera and green tea, which experts warn may pose health risks such as liver damage and hormonal disruption.
Critics say the current system, which lets manufacturers assess their own ingredients, creates a conflict of interest and calls for independent safety reviews and greater transparency.
