Tennessee removed 149 GOP primary candidates for missing voting or fee requirements, with some reinstated after meeting criteria.
The Tennessee Republican Party has removed 149 candidates from the May 2026 primary ballot, citing new party by-law requirements including voting in at least three of the last four statewide Republican primaries and paying a $250 fee.
Among those removed were several county officials and candidates in Blount and Greene counties, with five in Blount County and four in Greene County later reinstated after meeting the financial and voting criteria.
The state party, which handles all eligibility determinations, sent notifications to election offices starting February 25, with final appeals due by March 5.
Some candidates reported receiving no prior notice, raising concerns about transparency and fairness.
The changes stem from a 2025 legislative amendment and the party’s updated by-laws, which now enforce stricter standards for candidate eligibility.
