Stephen J. Rogers pleaded guilty to killing his mother-in-law during a July 2025 shooting in Derby, Kansas, while their 8-year-old son was present.
Stephen J. Rogers, 29, of Wichita, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child endangerment in the July 2025 shooting death of his mother-in-law, Sharmaine Marlene Burke, 49, at a Derby mobile home.
Burke had called 911, reporting Rogers—allegedly intoxicated—threatened her with a gun while their 8-year-old son was inside.
Gunshots were heard during the call before it ended.
Deputies found Burke dead from multiple gunshot wounds at 11:57 p.m. Rogers was later arrested in Butler County with his son, who was unharmed.
Originally charged with first-degree murder, he pleaded guilty and is set to be sentenced on May 8, 2026.
