Severe 2025 bushfires in Victoria’s Grampians National Park devastated brush-tailed rock wallaby habitat, leaving fewer than 50 survivors facing ongoing threats from foxes and climate change.
In 2025, severe bushfires in Grampians National Park destroyed much of the habitat for one of Victoria’s last brush-tailed rock wallaby colonies, leaving fewer than 50 individuals with little food and shelter.
Though the wallabies survived by hiding in rocky crevices, park staff provided months of supplemental feeding to prevent starvation and reduce predation risk.
Experts, including University of Adelaide’s David Taggart, say foxes are the primary threat, while climate change intensifies dangers by increasing fire frequency, prolonging droughts, and forcing wallabies to move to higher elevations—areas where they are more vulnerable to predators.
