Whelan died three days later.
Sadiq, who is Nigerian-born, admitted to the attack, claiming racial slurs were exchanged and that the act was impulsive.
A jury convicted him in January after a mistrial in February 2025.
Whelan’s family and community honored him with a memorial plaque.
