Milwaukee Film buys historic Downer Theatre for $8M to fund restoration and preserve its cultural role.
Milwaukee Film has purchased the historic Downer Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s oldest continuously operating cinema, from Bridge33 Capital.
The nonprofit, which has operated the venue since 2024, secured the building through private donations and a low-interest loan from The Helmerich Trust.
The acquisition enables a multi-year restoration plan, including upgrades to seating, restrooms, projection systems, and the marquee, with construction set to begin in 2028.
The project is funded by an $8 million capital campaign, and naming rights may be sold to support costs.
The theater will continue hosting the Milwaukee Film Festival and other cultural events.
