Malaysia investigates alleged foreign-backed plot to undermine government ahead of 2028 election.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed on March 3, 2026, that authorities are investigating an alleged plot to destabilize the government, linked to a suspect in a major corruption probe, who reportedly hired an international PR firm to launch a coordinated campaign targeting national institutions ahead of the 2028 general election.
The strategy, beginning in August 2024, involved influencing foreign media, banks, and lawmakers to discredit the government and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), with Bloomberg named as a targeted outlet.
A separate committee is probing allegations from a Bloomberg report about MACC chief Azam Baki’s shareholding, which he denies.
The MACC dismissed the claims as baseless.
While some lawmakers called for a royal inquiry, Anwar deemed it premature, as the committee’s findings are expected imminently.
