A jury awarded $10 million to Idaho professor Rebecca Scofield after finding TikToker Ashley Guillard falsely linked her to the 2022 student killings.
A federal jury in Idaho has awarded University of Idaho history professor Rebecca Scofield $10 million in damages after finding Texas TikToker Ashley Guillard liable for spreading false claims linking Scofield to the 2022 stabbing deaths of four students in Moscow, Idaho.
The verdict, reached in under two hours, included $7.5 million in punitive and $2.5 million in compensatory damages.
Guillard, who represented herself, made repeated false assertions on TikTok without evidence that Scofield had a romantic relationship with a victim and orchestrated the killings, despite Scofield being out of state and having no connection to the victims or the crime.
The case followed the guilty plea of Bryan Kohberger, who is serving four life sentences for the murders.
The jury’s decision underscores the legal consequences of spreading unverified claims during tragedies.
