Japan has pledged $12.5 million for a four-year project in Fiji and Samoa to combat youth drug use, launched March 3, 2026, in Suva.
The initiative, backed by UNICEF, aims to protect over 150,000 children and adolescents, support 10,000 at-risk youth, and train nearly 3,000 frontline workers.
It responds to a rise in drug-related incidents, including 3,143 school cases in 2025 and 2,446 illicit drug cases between May 2024 and May 2025, with 50 involving children.
The project will establish 30 child-friendly service hubs and 45 student-friendly spaces, promote early intervention, and prioritize prevention and rehabilitation over detention.
It aligns with Fiji’s national counter-narcotics strategy and Child Justice Act 2024, emphasizing trauma-informed care and community resilience.
