Iran's drone barrage overwhelms Middle East defenses, exposing vulnerabilities despite U.S. and allied missile shields.
Iranian-made Shahed drones, previously used by Russia in Ukraine, have become a major threat in the Middle East after Iran launched a large-scale drone and missile barrage against Israel, Gulf states, and U.S. and allied targets following U.S.-Israel strikes.
The drones, capable of flying 2,000 km and carrying 40 kg of explosives, overwhelmed air defenses in attacks on ports, oil facilities, airports, and military bases in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and a UK base in Cyprus.
In Dubai, over 540 drones and 165 missiles were intercepted in two days, with debris sparking fires.
While advanced missile defenses stopped most ballistic threats, the sheer volume of cheap, slow-flying drones exposed vulnerabilities, prompting urgent calls for Western militaries to adopt Ukraine’s low-cost defensive tactics like mobile anti-drone units and interceptor drones.
