Iowa lawmakers demand Whirlpool explain plans for 341 Amana plant layoffs and potential Mexico shift.
Iowa lawmakers Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Ashley Hinson are demanding answers from Whirlpool CEO Marc Bitzer by Thursday regarding the planned March 9 layoff of 341 workers at the Amana plant.
They are seeking information on whether production will shift to non-U.S. facilities, particularly Mexico, and details on severance and health insurance support for affected workers.
The layoffs are part of Whirlpool’s multi-year modernization plan to retool the plant for warehousing, parts production, and sub-assembly while maintaining high-end refrigerator manufacturing.
The company warns further cuts may come in the second quarter.
