India orders stronger food safety enforcement, focusing on high-risk foods and faster complaint resolution.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed states and union territories to boost food safety enforcement by filling vacant positions for Food Safety Officers and technical staff, emphasizing risk-based inspections and special drives targeting high-risk foods like milk, edible oils, spices, and honey.
FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani urged faster complaint resolution, transparent reporting, and improved coordination between central and state agencies during the 49th Central Advisory Committee meeting in Gangtok, attended by around 110 officials.
The meeting also focused on enhancing centralized surveillance, data-driven decision-making, and streamlining licensing processes to strengthen oversight while ensuring compliance ease.
