Idaho Senate passes 4% budget cut, eliminating 110 jobs to address revenue shortfalls.
The Idaho Senate narrowly passed a 4% budget cut for most state agencies in fiscal year 2026, reducing the general fund by $131.3 million and eliminating 110 full-time positions, in response to revenue shortfalls from federal tax changes and past tax cuts.
The 18-17 vote included opposition from all six Democratic senators and several Republicans, who criticized the across-the-board approach as arbitrary and lacking transparency.
The cuts apply to the Idaho Attorney General’s Office, despite Governor Brad Little’s earlier exemption.
The measure, part of a 50-page bill, aims to meet the state’s balanced budget requirement, with a projected $45 million reserve by June 30, 2026.
A second, larger cut is expected for fiscal year 2027.
