Haiti has opened a 10-day registration period for political parties to participate in its first general election since 2016, a critical step toward restoring democracy amid severe gang violence and political instability.
The process, managed by the Provisional Electoral Council, runs from March 2 to March 12, 2026, and requires detailed documentation from parties and coalitions.
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, now the sole leader after the transitional council disbanded, aims for a general election in late August and a runoff in early December.
However, gangs control an estimated 90% of Port-au-Prince, blocking campaign access and endangering candidates, while over 5,900 people were killed and 1.4 million displaced in 2025.
Despite these challenges, officials say registration is a necessary step forward.
