Greek police arrested a Georgian man at Athens airport for allegedly spying on the U.S. naval base at Souda Bay, Crete, based on photos of the USS Gerald R. Ford found on his phone.
Greek authorities have detained a 36-year-old Georgian man at Athens airport on suspicion of spying on the U.S. naval base at Souda Bay, Crete, a key NATO and U.S. facility.
The arrest followed intelligence from Greece’s security service, with investigators examining digital evidence, including photos of the U.S. aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, found on the suspect’s phone.
He had been staying near the base earlier in February.
This marks the second espionage-related arrest in Crete within months, following a June detention of an Azeri national near a military site.
Security at the base has been heightened amid regional tensions, including recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
The investigation remains ongoing.
