Georgia moves to suspend teen drivers' licenses and limit activities over chronic school absences.
Georgia lawmakers have advanced SB 513, the "Every Day Counts Act," which would allow the state to suspend driver’s licenses and restrict extracurricular participation for teens aged 15 to 17 deemed chronically unexcused absentees—defined as five unexcused absences in the first 50 school days or 10% of days thereafter.
The bill, passed 46-1 in the Senate, now moves to the House.
It mandates coordination between the Department of Education and the Department of Driver Services to track attendance and enforce penalties, while requiring schools to implement support programs.
Supporters say it’s a data-driven approach to improving student engagement and attendance.
