Denise Merker, 56, pleaded not guilty to killing her 1993 newborn daughter, identified via DNA in 2025.
Denise Reischman Merker, 56, of Riverhead, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in Suffolk County Court on March 2, 2026, in the 1993 death of her newborn daughter, Baby Emily, whose body was found in a garbage bag on Route 25 in Calverton.
Authorities say Merker, then 21, concealed her pregnancy, gave birth alone at her grandmother’s home, and suffocated the infant by packing paper towels in her mouth, fearing the baby’s crying.
The child, identified through DNA and genetic genealogy in 2025, was found weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces.
Merker denied giving birth to another child during a November 2025 interview, but a DNA sample from a discarded cigarette matched the infant’s DNA.
She confessed during a voluntary February 2, 2026, interview, was arrested, and held without bail.
The case continues, with a next court date set for April 15, 2026.
