D.C. lifts Potomac River recreational advisory after sewage spill cleanup; fishing allowed, swimming still restricted.
D.C. Health has lifted its recreational advisory for the Potomac River after water quality testing showed E. coli levels returned to safe, EPA-compliant ranges following a January 19 sewage spill that released about 240 million gallons of raw sewage.
The spill, caused by a rupture in the 72-inch Potomac Interceptor pipe, prompted federal emergency aid and extensive cleanup efforts involving multiple agencies.
Repairs, delayed by a rock dam discovery, are expected to be completed by mid-March.
While swimming remains restricted without a permit, fishing and other activities are now allowed in the District’s waters, though residents should follow guidance from neighboring jurisdictions.
