Belize launched a government-owned bus system on March 1, 2026, merging private operators into a unified network with cashless payments and electric buses.
Belize’s National Bus Company (NBC) launched on March 1, 2026, consolidating former private operators like Westline and James Buses into a unified, government-owned system.
The transition, following over a year of planning, aims to improve service reliability, eliminate overcrowding, and introduce a nationwide cashless payment system using Digio Wallet.
Electric buses are already in use in Belize City, with full rollout expected in three to four months.
While the NBC now operates with 17 operators and covers 65% of the market, some independent bus operators, represented by the Belize Bus Association, remain outside the system, citing insufficient consultation and lack of perceived benefits.
The government has assured them their operations will continue if they meet safety and service standards, and discussions about broader representation are ongoing.
