Bangladesh's High Court challenges the 2025 National Charter's legality, questioning if the interim government overstepped authority by bypassing parliament.
Bangladesh’s High Court has questioned the legality of the 2025 July National Charter and related ordinances, ordering government officials to explain why they should not be declared unconstitutional.
The ruling follows two public interest litigation petitions by Supreme Court lawyers challenging the referendum and charter, arguing the constitution does not permit referendums or such sweeping reforms.
The charter, backed by over 20 parties after the 2024 uprising, proposes 47 constitutional amendments, including a 10-year prime ministerial term limit and expanded presidential powers.
A February 12 referendum on the charter saw a 60.26% turnout and a "Yes" majority, but legal challenges center on whether the interim government overstepped its authority by bypassing parliament.
The court’s upcoming decision will determine the validity of the reforms and the interim government’s actions.
