Australian scientists revived the regent honeyeater’s endangered song via zoo tutoring, boosting breeding hopes.
Scientists in Australia have revived the traditional song of the critically endangered regent honeyeater, with fewer than 250 left in the wild, through targeted song tutoring at Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
Using recordings and two wild-born males, researchers taught captive-bred birds the original complex song lost due to population decline.
Over half of the zoo-raised males now sing the traditional song, improving prospects for successful breeding and reintroduction.
The effort highlights the importance of preserving learned behaviors, not just genetics, in conservation.
