Active travel in Ireland’s major cities avoids 660,000 car trips daily, improving health and cutting emissions.
A new National Transport Authority report reveals that up to 660,000 car trips are avoided daily across Ireland’s five largest cities—Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick/Shannon, and Waterford—due to increased walking, wheeling, and cycling.
The 2025 Walking and Cycling Index shows 70% of Dubliners walk or wheel at least five times a week, while 25% cycle weekly, with similar trends in other cities.
Active travel prevents 5,874 serious health conditions annually, saves €75 million in healthcare costs, and reduces emissions by 120,000 tonnes—equivalent to 1.5 million Dublin-to-London flights.
Residents strongly support infrastructure improvements, including separated cycle tracks and safer crossings, with 86% in Waterford favoring protected paths.
In Cork, women’s walking rates rose to 69%, and cycling among seniors increased.
Despite progress, safety concerns and gender gaps persist.
Los viajes activos en las principales ciudades de Irlanda evitan 660.000 desplazamientos diarios en coche, lo que mejora la salud y reduce las emisiones.
