UN rights chief praised India’s civil society, criticized Pakistan, China, Georgia, and Venezuela over human rights issues.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk commended India’s civil society during his February 2026 visit, praising its role in defending democracy and minority rights.
Speaking at the 61st UN Human Rights Council session, he expressed concern over Pakistan’s detention of human rights defenders, including lawyers sentenced for social media posts, and criticized China for suppressing peaceful expression, citing ongoing repression in Xinjiang and Tibet and restrictions on religious freedoms.
Turk also highlighted civic space restrictions in Georgia and Venezuela, called for greater civil society inclusion, and met with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to discuss global human rights challenges and terrorism as a human rights violation.
