Scotland legalizes water cremation, an eco-friendly alternative, effective March 2, 2026.
Scotland has become the first part of the UK to legalize water cremation, or hydrolysis, a process that uses heated water and chemicals to break down a body in a biodegradable shroud, leaving bone fragments similar to ashes.
The method, approved by the Scottish Parliament and effective March 2, 2026, offers an eco-friendly alternative to burial or traditional cremation, following a 2023 public consultation showing 84% support.
It will be regulated with the same standards for dignity and care as existing methods.
The first procedures are expected later in 2026, pending final approvals.
The technique is already used in the US, Canada, Ireland, and South Africa.
