Over 500 Liberian workers get back pay after firms underpaid them below minimum wage.
Over 500 contractors in Grand Bassa County, Liberia, will receive back pay after a Ministry of Labor investigation found two hiring firms underpaid workers $3.80 per day—below the $5.50 statutory minimum.
Firms led by George B. Vonsuah and Arthur Peters, who recruited since 2019 and 2022, must pay $9,705.92 and $9,414.60 in retroactive wages to 326 and 213 workers, respectively.
The Ministry held the firms accountable despite the workers being hired through subcontractors, stressing that outsourcing does not exempt employers from labor law compliance.
Minister Cooper W. Kruah emphasized enforcement to protect workers’ rights and deter future violations.
