Nigeria splits OPL 245 oil field into four blocks for Eni and Shell, ending decades of legal disputes.
Nigeria has split the OPL 245 deepwater oil field into four blocks to be developed by Eni and Shell, a move that could resolve decades of legal and corruption disputes.
The field, one of Nigeria’s largest untapped reserves, has remained undeveloped since 1998 due to overlapping litigation and allegations of bribery tied to its original licensing to Malabu, linked to former oil minister Dan Etete.
The purchase of the stake by Shell and Eni was the subject of a high-profile Italian trial, where all defendants, including Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi, were acquitted in 2021.
Final contracts are expected to be signed starting today, marking a potential breakthrough in unlocking the field’s production.
Eni and Shell declined to comment, and Nigeria’s NNPC has not issued a statement.
