MetaOptics unveils a compact, contactless fingerprint scanner using tunable metalenses for secure smartphone and wearable use.
MetaOptics Ltd has developed a compact, tunable metalens module for 3D non-contact fingerprint scanning, using two ultra-thin metalenses separated by a 100-micron liquid crystal layer to enable electronic focus tuning without moving parts. The 1.65 mm optical stack fits within a 5 mm module, suitable for smartphones and wearables. It uses green light at 532 nm and a monochrome sensor to capture detailed fingerprint data under controlled conditions, offering improved security and hygiene over traditional contact-based methods. The technology, created with a Singapore-based research institute, leverages mature liquid crystal and scalable 12-inch DUV lithography processes. MetaOptics plans to showcase the module at CES 2027, aiming to advance secure, contactless identity verification in consumer devices.
