Lynas Malaysia gets 10-year license extension to run rare earths refinery, with strict environmental and R&D conditions.
Lynas Malaysia has received a 10-year licence extension to operate its rare earths refinery in Gebeng, effective March 3, 2026, avoiding a potential shutdown.
The renewal, under the Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984, includes strict conditions: Lynas must cease producing radioactive residue within five years, neutralize existing residue to below 1 becquerel per gram, and halt construction of new permanent disposal facilities.
The company must also dedicate 1% of annual gross sales to R&D and boost collaboration with local institutions.
The decision follows environmental and safety scrutiny, while CEO Amanda Lacaze prepares to retire after more than a decade.
The extension ensures continued operations amid rising global demand for rare earths used in clean energy and electronics.
