Leif Erickson was fatally shot in 1930 during a robbery attempt near Fargo, an unsolved crime that shocked the nation.
On June 29, 1930, 26-year-old Leif Erickson, a traveling collector for International Harvester and fiancé of Vera Helgerson, was fatally shot during a robbery attempt near Fargo’s north Broadway fairgrounds.
The assailant, described as wearing a gray hoodlike mask, demanded money and then attempted to assault Helgerson before fleeing when another vehicle approached.
Erickson was shot in the head and killed.
Despite a wide investigation, numerous clues—including a threatening letter, a bullet in the car door, and fingerprints—and two conflicting theories (a mentally unstable individual or a professional criminal)—no suspect was ever identified.
The case, which shocked the community during the Great Depression, remains officially unsolved, now over 96 years later.
