Ian Huntley, convicted killer, critically injured in prison attack, airlifted to hospital under heavy guard.
Ian Huntley, the convicted murderer serving a life sentence for the 2002 killings of two young girls, was critically injured in a prison attack at HMP Frankland in Durham on February 26, 2026, when he was struck with a metal pole.
His injuries were so severe that medical staff decided against air evacuation, opting instead to stabilize him on-site with a paramedic and doctor flown in from outside.
He was placed in an induced coma and transported by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, a 19-mile journey lasting 30 minutes under high-security conditions, with armed police escorts and two prison guards and an armed officer accompanying him.
The air ambulance later returned to the prison to retrieve the medical team.
