A Hunter College professor was placed on leave after a recording surfaced of her making racially charged remarks during a Feb. 10 Zoom meeting about potential school closures in New York City’s Upper West Side, where she reportedly said Black students were “too dumb to know they’re in a bad school.” The comment, made as a Black eighth grader spoke, sparked widespread condemnation from city officials, educators, and community members.
An emergency meeting drew over 150 attendees who unanimously condemned the remarks, called for anti-bias training, and urged improved virtual meeting protocols.
While no formal closure plans have been finalized, the incident intensified debate over systemic inequities in education, particularly how school restructuring proposals affect Black and low-income students.
