Lewis Hughes, a 24-year-old diesel mechanic from Maitland, has joined the Maitland Pickers after a decade in local rugby league, beginning with the West Maitland Red Dogs at age five.
After playing through three consecutive grand final losses with regional teams, he returns to his junior club, fulfilling a lifelong dream following a connection with coach Todd Edwards and a call from Pickers coach Matt Lantry.
Transitioning from Group 21 to the faster Newcastle competition, Hughes brings versatility as a hooker and lock, toughness, and strong passing skills, having played through a torn hamstring last season.
He trains regularly with the team and independently, motivated by camaraderie and fitness.
Coach Lantry praised his physical style, work ethic, and fit within the club’s winning culture, highlighting his role in the team’s pathway system.
Trials are set for March.
