A British soldier died in 2016 during training due to an accidental rifle discharge caused by unsafe handling and failed safety protocols.
Lance Corporal Joe Spencer, a 24-year-old British Army soldier from Hampshire, died on November 1, 2016, during a sniper training exercise at Tain Air Weapons Range in Scotland when a round fired unexpectedly from his L115A3 rifle.
He was standing in an iso container with the rifle’s butt on his foot and chin on the barrel when the discharge occurred, causing a fatal head injury.
The inquest, delayed due to parallel investigations, found the incident was avoidable, citing failure to properly unload the rifle after a prior live fire exercise and inadequate verbal commands for the unload drill.
Spencer, who joined the Army in 2011, had served in Afghanistan, survived a grenade attack, and was promoted to lance corporal before his death.
The coroner emphasized safety lapses contributed to the tragedy.
