Varanasi broke a world record by planting over 250,000 saplings in an hour using the Miyawaki method.
On March 1, 2026, Varanasi set a new Guinness World Record by planting 251,446 saplings in under an hour, surpassing China’s previous record.
The effort, led by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, involved over 20,000 participants and took place on a 350-bigha site near the Ganga ghats using the Miyawaki method.
The project, named 'Namo Van,' includes native trees, fruit-bearing and medicinal plants, and will feature walking paths, yoga zones, parks, and an open gym.
Officials say it will boost biodiversity, stabilize the riverbank, and generate up to ₹7 crore annually by the seventh year.
